FNC was the sixth highest rated cable network on all of basic cable.

And even their BEST RATED news show got 1/2 the viewers of lowly Katie Couric's CBS Evening News. OUCH.

And consider that CNN has their viewers split between two stations, as does MSNBC/CNBC.

Now the really REALLY funny part is O'Reilly's 2.5Million viewers is a bit less than Spongebob Squarepants running on Nick at Nite at the same time.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Cable is cable and network is network, and never the twain shall meet.

But isn't that rather the point. Fox tries to tout itself as a direct competitor to NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN and the only one it beats is CNN and only then when you fracture the CNN/HLN numbers. But of the 17Million people who watch the 6 PM newscast nationally, about 1.6M watch Fox. And there are only six outlets counted.

Maybe if they would quit so many car chases and aerials of local story bank robberies they could get some legitimacy.

But I like the car chases and aerials of bank robberies...

And you cannot compare network news and cable news. Most of us grew up on the big three network news programs and most people don't even have access to the cable news channels. So stop trying to compare them.
