Well, being a guy that goes to work at an oil refinery every day, I can tell you the real interest is in the coal convesion stuff. Oil sands and shale would require a whole new industrial plant, while coal conversion could be readily adapted to today's existing refineries.
Besides their biofuel research [including biomass in a very big way] look at Brazil for Coal conversion technologies.
These guys in Brazil are eating our lunch on energy R&D while we whistle past the graveyard with our thumbs up our ass debating whether or not there is a real problem, can we EXACTLY quantify it, guarantee it to 1/1,000,000 and make it all free.
When all the patents are offshore those same folks will complain that someone dropped the ball and let foreigners get ahead and it just isn't fair for their snowflake's future.
