It is sad that these type of uninformed hardcore supporters of the 14th Dalai Lama are not aware that half of the Tibetan population (3 million) lives elsewhere in China particular in the earthquake area of Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai. And countless others in the big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Dalian, Gunagzhou, etc. To the many hardcore supporters of Dalai Lama, Tibetans either live in Tibet, India or in the West.
The current 14th Dalai Lama was born in the eastern part of Qinghai province about 1200 miles from Tibet. Yes, he is a genuine Chinese citizen. When he was selected as a candidate of the reincarnated Dalai Lama, the local warlord Ma Lin, a Muslim in charge of Qinghai province and a close ally of Chiang Kai Sek refused to give him to the monks. The Kuomintang administration of the Republic of China had to payout 400,000 Silver Taels in order for the warlord to release Llhamo Döndrub, his birth name and his family to the monks.
The selection process of the reincarnated Dalai Lama always involves at least three boys but at that time the monks said they have no other candidates so they petitioned the Mongolian and Tibetan affairs office of Kuomintang administration to issue a waiver and pronounce him the 14th Dalai Lama. The waiver allowed Llhamo Döndrub to avoid the selection process whereby the three candidate names are written on separate pieces of paper and place inside an urn and a representative of the Emperor of China picks the name of the boy who will become the reincarnated Dalai Lama.
After his selection, the monks gave him a new name, Tenzin Gyatso. How Llhamo Döndrub was selected and the intensive involvement of the Mongolian and Tibetans Affairs Office of the Chinese government at the process seems to be conveniently omitted from his biography.
