A Geppetto for Bill Clinton - Fact Checker
"Tonight we've come from behind, we've broken the tie, and thanks to you it's full speed on to the White House."
--Hillary Clinton, May 6, 2008.

Brave, defiant words from Hillary Clinton. But observe the facial expressions. For many people watching television on Tuesday night, the most striking impression from the Clinton victory rally in Indiana was not the words that came out of Hillary's mouth, but the look on Bill's face. It was the look of a man who knows that a dream is slipping away.
The Facts

Try this experiment. Take a look at this extract from Clinton's speech in Indianapolis with the volume turned down. Watch the expressions on the faces of Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea, and let me know what you think.

Here is what I saw. A candidate with a mask of upbeat determination on her face, who knows deep down that the game is lost but is still on auto-pilot, unwilling to accept defeat. A proud and loving daughter who will support her mother to the very end. An exhausted spouse who is sick at heart because he knows, from his vast political experience, that the fight is over. He dutifully applauds at the right moments, and occasionally punches his fist in the air, but his face reveals his true feelings.

Even as the hope of a miraculous upset faded away, Hillary still came across as the energizer bunny, running on batteries that never seem to wind down. After giving it his all, in dozens of small town meetings across North Carolina and Indiana, Bill looked as if all the energy had suddenly been drained out of him.

I had an elderly friend in Harlan who was part of the Bataan Death March in WW2 that always had that same look that Bill has in the pic above.

Is it guilt over slavery that brings you to Obama?. Is it a black friend you once had that got beat up by white kids?. What is it?. What credentials does he have over Clinton?. You want change Drew?, you want hope?, in your face bro cause "yes you can" and will get it and drag us all down with your vote.

Is it ok to simply not like Obama and not be called a racist?. Do you feel that everyone that votes for Clinton hates black people?. I hope not because things are completely opposite. The black people that would have voted for Clinton if Obama wasn't black are the racists and you join ranks with them.

If Obama was white and I still fucking hated the guy would you be posting pics of poor black people like the ones you did?. Who is the racist?.

Hey, maybe you'll get lucky and Hillary will pull a sneaky Lieberman and run as an independent; then you could stick it to the black man, real good

Ha! She and McCain could fight over Lieberman as a running mate.

he's got the best credential that one could get: he's got class!
The man would not stoop as low as her and the herd that want to make something out of nothing to smear him with whatever they can grab.
He's not pandering around and pretending to know or even be a middle class or poor working class, he was already there. Who's really coming across pathetic in here on this subject eh? Who's sounding more like Bush every day right now and threatening sovereign nations with the full might of the United States? One thing I will give you, they both pander to Israel, who wouldn't anyway? They would both kiss their careers goodbye if they didn't and I have a feeling that they will try to outdo each other here because it's just the way it is. On this issue if Nader was electable I would have stuck with him but frankly Obama is the best of the electable crowd and he strikes me as genuine unlike Hillary that's just morphing into a redneck to scrap the bottom on her way down.

Interesting thing I am seeing on the Democratic blogs: Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos", in which he encourages RWNJ's to vote for Clinton has made her vote counts illegimate in Indiana in the eyes of a lot of Democrat heavyweights. Since the margin was only 30,000 votes, one can easily surmise that Obama is the actual winner of that contest too, minus the RWNJ crossover votes. This is causing a lot of pressure on Clinton to drop out, creating just the opposite effect of what "Oxy" Limbaugh intended, virtually guaranteeing the nomination to Obama, the candidate most feared by the GOP nutcase wing.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
