I think it's an image thing. Maybe not so much a status symbol, but a purchased acquisition of masculinity, virility, importance, or just simply relevance. After all, we could all be driving the exact same little 50 MPG sedans. It would make sense. It would be very cheap to mass produce and repair a billion of the same vehicle.

I recently visited my mother in South Carolina, and her neighbors have at least 5-6 vehicles in their driveway, all SUV's. I had to laugh because I know it hurts.

Yes, fuel pricess are becoming a pain for most people.
Looking back I am very happy with the decision to go ahead with diesel/biodiesel for my energy needs.
4 biodiesel vehicle and a 400 gallon reserve of free vegetable oil.
This summer I hope to increase it to 1000 gallons and have the water heater converted too.
At $1.40/gall I can't complain.

Why not have the best of both worlds?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

So guys buy big SUVs so they will look big and strong. Have they thought about just getting big and strong?

Would that also explain why women buy minivans with all the options? A big box full of toys.
