Or more to the point, the study tended to count Deductions on taxes and claimed charities and not count volunteer work, time, food banks, habitat for humanity, nature conservancy time and other work which is how the majority of donations are achieved.
Put another way, after much life experience most folks tend to not use "amount of money" as a gauge of success or effort [except the Jerry Lewis Telethon and political campaigns, apparently].
As long as the authors were honest in reporting methodology, I don't understand the problem. If you don't like their methodology, write your own book and explain why conservatives are a buncha assholes.
But even conservatives aren't the pinnacle of ass-holiness, that would be the distinction acquired and proudly borne by libertarians -- who think that if you can't handle the kitchen, your goose is cooked! (and deservedly so)
