One thing the Democratic Congress is doing with these bills is getting Bush to VETO appropriations for some projects that previously he rubberstamped when there was a Republican Congress.

What this means in the next election cycle is that McCain can't depend on ANY of Bush's record for support as he runs his campaign.

While he is running pretty equal while there are TWO Democrats in the race to divide allegiances and skew poll results, once it becomes One:One and McCain has to depend on NeoCon History to help him, Bush's vetoes are going to be just another Albatross from the Bush Legacy. Those VETOES are taking projects from Republicans as well as Democrats.

I DO like Checks and Balances.

Once the Dem race is officially settled, I think you'll see McCain distancing himself from Bush in a big way.

Hoagland makes excellent points. The truth is our government does better spending wise when the Congress and White House is divided between the parties, but it requires responsible leadership in order to work. This is the most political administration in history, nothing will be decided on responsibility, instead it will be the usual game playing from Bush and his band of fucking criminals. But I will tell you something that the electorate has decided: if it is going to have the worst of worlds and give it all to one party, eight years of Bush has changed their mind of what party that will be.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

The best thing about a deadlocked congress is that it minimizes the damage they can do to american public.

He does indeed, not the least of which is his very last sentence. The result of the upcoming election should be a foregone conclusion by now, but it isn't -- not by a long shot.

Actually I would say the upcomming election is a forgone conclusion. It is just not the conclusion the pundits and prognosticators have been saying it will be.

I think McCain is going to fade in the stretch as this thing moves forward and the Democrat starts focusing on McCain, his ties to Bush, his votes to support Bush policies, his Keating issues, etc. Right now McCain has a free ride for three months while Laural and Hardy continue to wander through the Midwest fighting coffee machines and a quickly bored electorate.

Once the General Election comes into play, the "do you really want four more years of...?" will start taking their toll.

Heard the same refrain in the last election.

The democrats had a slam dunk with a Hillary (pres) and Obama (VP) but both candidates are too polarizing by themselves and the prolonged democratic primary has taken its toll.
