Greenspan once was the master of obfuscatory "Greenspeak," the man who in 1995 counseled senators that "if I say something which you understand fully ... I probably made a mistake." But shorn of that ambiguity, his message - that the Fed's role in fostering an unprecedented run-up of house prices has been vastly overstated, and that regulators aren't up to the task of preventing financial crises anyway - sounds almost willfully obtuse.

This is what I have gotten out of these discussions so far this morning (I am admittedly pretty dim when it comes to economics):

1. The U.S. seems to be moving toward an E. Asian model of capitalism in which workers who produce goods can not afford to purchase the very goods they produce, with overall economic welfare highly dependent on export sales

2. We are moving toward a Utopian form of socialism in which every citizen works for the government.

3. These are good things.

Weak 0.6% economic growth in Q1 is better than forecast - USATODAY.com
Growth in what? Increasingly worthless dollars. Value you it in Euros and see what you get. This economy is just a shell game.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
