Interesting VF article. The first 18 or so NYT Poll questions made very good sense, as did the last few demographics questions.

I think the five or so questions toward the end that were article specific were somewhat dubious for that kind of poll. If I were running the poll, I would not have put those in as they are more "Do you like us, do you really really like us" questions.

The rest of the poll was standard media boilerplate "how are we doing with the rest of our peergroup" questions with a focus on Internet use which is important as it helps define why the are losing pulp subscribers.

I only get paper NYT on Sunday as I like to read it on the deck, a 25 year tradition.

Yes, I sensed a hint of desperation in some of those questions... Rupert Murdoch could probably turn that paper around in a matter of weeks!

Sure, sure, start publishing titties and asses on page 3 like The Sun.

I've seen how enthusiastic you get each time a woman enters this forum.

Like-minded idiots will buy the NYT in a bundle based upon your hypothesis.

I don't see desperation as much as I see an interest in troubleshooting issues that they see in some of their high profile stories.

The Blair issue, as an example [last question], it is more about "did this make a lasting impression on our credibility?" type question. CBS asked the same thing with Dan Rather.

As for Murdoch, he might be able to sell more papers but that does not "turn the paper around". Success is not always measured by money. The Times will be around in some form when Murdoch's empire has been broken into pieces as he treats news as commodities. The reputation of the WSJ has already diminished as now is considered to have a political lean where in the past it was considered "Business, above Politics" [their previous advertising slogan].

Unfortunately, the NYT is so successful as a newspaper, it's losing lots of money. Soon there may not be anything to measure for all their efforts. Which will make your statement absolutely true.

What would be your ideal world? Fox News, WJ, Savage Nation, and anything owned by Rupert Murdoch and nothing else

Some people would find selling America lock, stock and barrel to the Chinese or any other higher bidder for a profit a good old "American" deal that can't be passed up. Nothing is not for sale to some people. You sound like one of them. Jim

Yeah, I know a lot of people who define success by how much money they make. The true successful ones grow out of it.
