The employer can require you to show an photo ID I suppose, but federal document requirements for getting a job require two documents, and the list of documents include all kinds of paper ID's that can be used. Illegals usually use a forged SS card and and a forged birth certificate, neither of which has any photo ID, and that satisifies the federal documentation requirements and protects the employer from any penalty.

The entire illegal alien problem could be easily solved by a biometric ID SS card tied to a government database of your thumbprint, a system in use by Germany and other advanced democracies. But we live in a land of 666 apocalypse nut cases and paranoid gun freaks who would rather let other religious freaks fly planes into our building rather than setting up a national ID system , so don't look for it to happen anytime soon. The corporations will continue to use our religious superstitions and right-wing paranoia to keep the cheap labor coming, while they peddle bogus solutions like fences that they know will never work.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

On this issue I agree with FTL.

With that bit of knowledge we'll both want to take a bath.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thatís what I intend to reverse.

Not only that, we'll need that National ID system when Obama and his band of Bitter Pastors take over, after which we will make all of you wear Muslim lapel pins. You can expect one of those in the mail instead a six hundred dollar check.
