UK - Land of Riches!

heh, heh.......never had it so good! heh, heh.......

UK's super-rich 'getting richer'

Lakshmi Mittal tops the list for the fourth year in a row

The UK's super-rich have never been richer, according to this year's Sunday Times Rich List.
The top 1,000 richest people in the country now have more than £400bn between them, it estimates - up almost £53bn in the last year.
Forty of the top 75 are foreign. Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal is top again with £27.7bn, up £8bn on 2007.
Times are harder for UK figures such as Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson, whose fortune dropped by £400m to £2.7bn.
Sir Richard has dropped nine places in the list, down from 11th in 2007 to 20th.
New entries
It is the fourth year running that Lakshmi Mittal has topped the list.
Second is Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, the Russian oil and industry tycoon who saw his fortune increase from £10.8bn to £11.7bn this year.
New entries in the top 10 include steel and mines magnate Alisher Usmanov - the largest shareholder in Arsenal football club - who comes in at five with £5.7bn.
Lakshmi Mittal, steel (£27.7bn)
Roman Abramovich, oil and industry (£11.7bn)
The Duke of Westminster, property (£7bn)
Sri and Gopi Hinduja, Industry and finance (£6.2bn)
Alisher Usmanov, Steel and mines (£5.7bn)
Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli, pharmaceuticals (£5.6bn)
Hans Rausing and family, packaging (£5.4bn)
John Fredriksen, shipping (£4.6bn)
Sir Philip and Lady Green, retailing (£4.3bn)
David and Simon Reuben, property (£4.3bn)

He is followed by Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli: the former Miss UK winner and her husband have a £5.6bn fortune based on pharmaceuticals.
Sunday Times Rich List editor Ian Coxon said it was the British-born billionaires, like Sir Richard Branson, who were being hardest hit by the credit crunch.
Monaco-based Sir Philip Green, 56, who with his wife Tina, 58, owns Bhs and Topshop, has seen the value of his retail fortune drop by more than 10% in a year to £4.3bn, according to the list.
Ineos chemicals billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, 55, owner of the strike-torn Grangemouth refinery, has seen an ever bigger downturn which is attributed to higher energy costs and more competition from the Middle East.
Ratcliffe, 10th in the list last year with an estimated fortune of £3.3bn, now sits at 25th, worth £2.3bn.
A fortune of £80m is needed to be one of Britain's richest 1,000 people - up from £70m in 2007.

The top 1,000 richest included 762 self-made millionaires.
Philip Beresford, who has compiled the list since it was first published in 1989, said: "Until now, the 11 years of Labour government have proved a boon for the super-rich, rarely seen before in modern British history.
"However, much of the rise in this year's wealth can be attributed to one factor: the number of foreign rich who have made London or its environs the main home and base of operation."
The Queen's wealth has stayed fairly static at £320m, Mr Coxon said - although she has been sliding slowly down the list in recent years and is this year at 264. Meanwhile the Independent on Sunday has published its antidote to the rich list, which it calls the Happy List of 100 people who make Britain a better and a happier place to live. These include Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the worldwide web, cricketer and fundraiser Ian Botham, and author and philanthropist JK Rowling.

Here is a Englishman with the title of Lord and only a 750 million pound fortune who the English can really be proud of..............

Top Tory Lord Laidlaw's sex games with 4 girls, one gigolo and a tri-lingual bisexual

A TOP Tory paymaster is today exposed as a sex addict hooked on orgies with £3,000-a-night vice girls.

Lord Laidlaw, 64 regularly flies hookers out to Monte Carlo for cocaine-fuelled bondage romps behind his wife's back.

Last night, faced with our damning proof, the shamed peer confessed: "I should have been stronger resisting temptations.

A News of the World investigation has revealed the sex-mad baron hires up to FIVE vice girls at a time for all-night orgies of spanking, bondage and lesbian lust at his Monaco tax haven.

Lord Irvine Laidlaw of Rothiemay, married and worth £730million, has given around £6million to David Cameron's party—leaving plenty for regular sleazy vice parties behind loyal wife Christine's back.

But last night the disgraced peer owned up, checked himself into a six-week residential sex addict programme and donated £1million to help fellow "sufferers".

In his astonishing letter to the News of the World he confessed:

"I've been fighting sexual addiction for my whole adult life. There is no cure for it and self-help is rarely successful. I have been in therapy a number of times but I have not worked hard enough or continuously enough on this.

"I should also have been stronger in resisting the temptations."

Embarrassingly for the Tories, Laidlaw's shocking secret is exposed at a crucial time—just days before Thursday's local elections and the vital vote for London's mayor.

The peer—Scotland's second richest man and ranked 110 in today's new Sunday Times Rich List—has given Conservative candidate Boris Johnson £25,000 for his campaign to snatch power in the capital.

And as a tax exile, he is a prime target at the centre of moves to force peers—often rich men ennobled after making huge political donations—to live in Britain and pay taxes here.

But as the party machine swung into action to win votes the lewd Lord was busy splashing out another £27,000, personally arranging for four prostitutes and a male gigolo to join him in Monte Carlo's luxurious Hermitage Hotel for an anything-goes night of shame.

In the £6,000-a-night presidential suite the hookers snorted cocaine and guzzled champagne before getting down to the depraved main event.

One of Laidlaw's stunning escort girls, 22-year-old Vogue model Michelli Vignardi told us it was a "crazy" party, but added that Laidlaw DOESN'T indulge in the coke.

But brunette Michelli added: "Irvine was drinking and taking the sex drug Viagra. He f***ed me and another girl. He can still f***.

"He knew the other girl from an earlier party because she knew exactly what he liked. She was trying to do what turned him on.

"Irvine likes her very much but she left at about 1am. I just stayed with him watching the others. That's what he really likes—to see a show.

"He liked to watch the male model, called Ben, f***ing with the girls. I think that's why the guy was there. Every time Ben went away to get a drink Irvine was pleading, ‘Come back!' At one point Irvine looked on as Ben had sex with me and three other girls.

"We also did a lesbian show for him. I do everything except unnatural acts. I'm very easy-going you know!"

Michelli, a leggy 5ft10ins with 32DD curves, charges £3,000 for a night of sex and can sweet talk her clients in Italian, English and Spanish. She revealed Laidlaw also footed the bill for her return air fare from London, plus chauffeured limo from Nice airport.

Michelli told us Laidlaw had actually booked the hotel for TWO days and invited her to stay on after the party if she wanted. She said: "He left next day but said ‘Enjoy the hotel, everything is paid for!'"

But Laidlaw is not quite so laid back when it comes to drawing up his orgy invite lists, say the vice professionals he uses.

One of the Madams he does business with, a Manchester housewife called Sara who helps run London escort agency Role Models, insisted: "I only send him absolute class."

Sara has a string of international models plus well-known British actresses and TV presenters on her books, secretly working as part-time escorts.

They charge £3,000 a night plus return flight tickets for "orgy-type" parties. "They're all high-class party girls," said Sara. "I've been with Irvine for ages. I know exactly what he wants. He has a sort of light bondage thing. He likes it to be fun though, light domination.

"He's got a particular type. He likes them to be very petite, they can be tall but he likes them very small-breasted."

Sara was talking to us at the Jumeira Carlton hotel in Knightsbridge.

"I've got some lovely girls," promised Sara. "They speak languages, one is a lawyer, they're not full-time. They're all very upmarket."

She could not help boasting about her top-drawer connections and how she had sent Michelli, a petite blonde called Gaby and male model Ben to Laidlaw last month.

"He had a party with a dominatrix brought in from New York," she said. "The time before that, Ben went out there with a blonde called Jamie. She's a nutritionist and Irvine raves about her. Before that there was Vanusa and Cassandra. She's a real cutie, only 19. She's a lesbian, totally bisexual. And it's not acting. She's a very, very naughty girl. And they all like a little line of coke.

"What I like about Irvine is that it's done with so much style," she added. "They all sit down to dinner first. It's not tacky. You all get in the mood, you all get dressed up."

Sara said Laidlaw, married to second wife Christine for 11 years, also liked her to send a selection of men over to see him.

"They're not gay, they're straight," she insisted. "They perform with the girls and put a show on. It should be fun!"

An insider confirmed that Laidlaw has booked from Sara's agency for several years. "He's a regular client and books several escorts at a time," said the source.

"He may be getting on a bit but he certainly likes to party. He has his favourites who've flown to Monaco several times to entertain him and he's almost like a friend to Sara.

"He sends emails to the agency openly saying what he wants to do with the girls."

In one early email shown to us, Lord Laidlaw wrote: "Dinner in a private room with lots of good wine, then party, maybe out to club afterwards (but it is Monday, so not much open in Monaco). Effectively overnight, as they won't be leaving until Tuesday morning.

"I have invited a New York-based dominatrix that I have known for a long time.

"She is great fun, not heavy, and really into the sexual end of bondage and mild spanking. Also there will be my Monaco girlfriend, Tina, who has been to other parties with your stable."

His email sign-off lists contact numbers for his string of luxurious homes around the globe.

It's an enviable five-star lifestyle. But last night the peer, who has recovered from prostate cancer and a heart attack, was desperately trying to make amends for his secret vice habit.

Laidlaw booked himself a six-week residential stay at a clinic in South Africa to be treated for sex addiction starting tomorrow. And he pledged an incredible ONE MILLION POUNDS charity donation to help others in a similar plight.

A close pal said: "Irvine wants to get help AND make it available for those who might not be in the position to pay for it. He regrets his actions totally and wants to get better. He's taking this seriously and knows he has heaped embarrassment on his family and friends."

Tycoon Laidlaw was ennobled in 2004 after he told the Lords Appointments Commission he would END his tax exile status as a condition of being allowed to take up his seat. Even Tory leader David Cameron has told him he should honour his undertakings but he has so far failed to keep his pledge—citing "personal reasons" and ill health—and now faces calls to be stripped of his peerage.

With the threat of a £50million bill for three years' back taxes hanging over him, Laidlaw last year took "leave of absence" from the Lords and does not sit or vote in the House.

His PR spokesman Lord Bell said: "He felt this would take the pressure off the Conservative Party."

Laidlaw was also one of four major donors to the Conservative Party questioned by police investigating "cash for peerages" claims, but he has always declared his donations properly to the Electoral Commission.

Last year he converted a £2.9 million loan to the Tories into a gift and donated £200,000 to the party in Scotland. He also pays the £100,000 salary of a senior spin doctor and gives away huge sums to charities, including the Laidlaw Youth Project which mentors Scottish children from difficult backgrounds.

Mill owner's son Laidlaw began his rise to fabulous riches with an education at top private school Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh.

After studying economics at Leeds University he took a masters degree in business administration at Columbia University in America and married his first wife, Norwegian Anne Marie, when he was 22.

The couple divorced in 1985 after 20 years and he met his second wife Christine two years later.

He started his working life as a financial analyst with the American publishing house Doubleday but in 1973, when he was 30, he founded the business that would make his vast fortune.

His Institute for International Research, became the world's biggest trade conference and exhibition organiser.

The company staged more than 4,000 events a year, including the prestigious Monaco Yacht Show. With 93 per cent of the firm in his pocket, Laidlaw employed around 3,000 people and had offices in London, Monaco and Florida, operating across 70 countries.

The company boasted annual sales of £313 million and profits of £48 million just before he sold up in 2005 for £770million.

Afterwards he said: "I always wanted to be successful and you can't be a successful businessman without being rich."

Laidlaw's passions include sailing and he has twice won the Key West Regatta in Florida .

He owns a cruising yacht on the Cote d'Azur, a racing yacht in America, a private jet, and six vintage cars—including a 1937 Maserati which he races around the hairpin bends of Monte Carlo.

Laidlaw and wife Christine enjoy an extraordinary life flitting between their £4million vineyard near St Tropez on the French Riviera, a £3million apartment in Monte Carlo overlooking the harbour and a massive £10 million estate near Cape Town, South Africa—the most expensive house in the country.

Laidlaw also has a grand £2million home in London's Eaton Square, a Scottish mansion called The Royal Palace, and a stunning £14million stately home in Hamp-shire—Moundsmere Manor near Preston Candover—which he put up for sale last year. It boasts 15 bedrooms and 84 acres of parkland. Laidlaw bought it as an investment for £9million three years ago.

Yesterday the shamed Lord was back in South Africa with wife Christine. But his close pal insisted: "When it's appropriate Irvine WILL come back onshore and return to Britain."
