I have been invited for Jury Duty next week. I guess it's the selection phase but I got a shit load of work and cars that need some tending. If it's for one day, on that same day, then I am game but if they are going to select me to stay on for days or even weeks then I am going to be mad. Anyone has advise to help me through this?
This is coming "from the inside"
What are you asking?
I was involved in Jury selection for about 20 years in the San Francisco Superior Court working with the Jury Commissioners, from the inside and courtroom point of view and might be a good person to ask.
What is the question?
Certainly, you will be advised of the projected length of the trial.
If it is going to go for weeks or months, like a multiple defendant murderr trial, or anti trust kind of thing, you may be given a hardship questionaire to fill out.
The Courts do not have the intent to see people driven into financial ruin or get evicted or lose jobs.
On the other hand, they take a dim view of people using transparent excuses to evade or avoid jury duty. It is viewed as one of the benefits and burdens of citizenship, jury duty is.
Never tell them "my grandmother died in Texas and I have to go to the funeral." That one is the oldest excuse in the book.
If it is "I am going on my honeymoon", you better have the god damned tickets in your purse to show the judge right then.
