The behavioral laws to which I refer apply to all organisms, from amoeba to humans of all ages--and, yes, even to terrorist organizations. Though the complex of stimuli controlling behavior in those organizations is very difficult to modify even they are subject to these laws.
It is the same situation as the drive-by media's attention to terrorist successes while ignoring US successes reinforces their behavior and increases it. Have you never noticed the relationship between major events in this country such as Congressional hearings and media attention and that of the terrorists in foreign lands? It is direct and it is real. And it results in many more deaths on all sides than would otherwise occur.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
