Carter brokered the peace deal between Egypt and Israel, earning himself a Nobel Peace Prize in the process. The two nations have been at peace since 1979 as a result, so he has the chops to talk to Hamas and I wish him the best of luck. That being said, until they renounce their stated goal of the destruction of Israel, I doubt if much will be accomplished. The only solution to counter that position is to support the Israelis in their effort to exterminate the Hamas faction, but I see no reason to not hold talks with them while they are being exterminated.
The real reason those on the right oppose peace talks or any type of contact with our enemies is simple: something good might happen and derail their military-industrial death machine and the gravy train they ride along with it.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
