The situation is too complicated to explain in a post. First, Arab countries fought Israel a few times (mostly phony wars to delude the then-mostly-patriotic Arab street). Then, they financially supported the Palesine Liberation Organization for some time until the PLO started peace talks with Israel afterwhich aid was channelled to the Palestinian National Authority (which is just as corrupt as any Arab regime). After Hamas won the latest elections, the situation drastically deteriorated with Israel imposing an embargo on the 1.5 million Palestinians living in Hamas-led Gaza turning the situation into a disaster. The disgraceful thing is that, not only Israel and the US, but all Arab countries and the so-called Palestinian National Authority are accomplices in this henious crime. Other than those who don't have a clue about what's going on, Arab citizens are either very proud of Hamas and wish there will come a time when the oppressed opposition can take control of the government in their respective countries (like Hamas did) or too poor to think beyond their daily loaf of bread.
For “phony wars”, they sure managed to kill a lot of people on both sides.
1948-49 War losses, Israel 6,500 KIA - Arab States, 10,000 to 15,000 (estimate)
1956-57 War losses, Israel, Great Britain, France, 298 KIA - Egypt 1,650 KIA
1967 War losses, Israel, 779 KIA - Jordan, UAR, 21,000 KIA
1973–74 War losses, Israel, 2,656 KIA - Egypt, Syria, Iraq, 8,528 (at least)
1982 War losses, Israel, South Lebanon Army, 675 KIA - Syria, POL, LCP, 9,798 KIA
From what little I know, it seems obvious that the Palestinian people were fed up with the lack of anything that the PLO under Arafat did for them, and since HAMAS promised the sun, the moon, and the stars and since they threw some money at them which they apparently got from Iran or some other source, plus were pretty much the only other game in town, they won the election.
It doesn’t change the fact that they are still considered a “terrorist organization” does it?
To solely blame Israel for the problems in the region is just plane wrong, it is far more likely that there are a few in charge in the various Arab States that think they can benefit from using the Palestinian people to improve their positions and pocketbooks. That’s the real shame of the situation as I see it.
