btw, consider the Bose Accoustamass system. I'm running the Acoustamass6 through a Sony amp and it is unbelievable. God I love it when that blue DTS light shines.
And just like that, he shits the bed.

Hey, I've got all sorts of nifty audio gadgetry designed to improve on your Acoustimass system. It all works wirelessly - no cables needed at all! Just place these black boxes near the sub, and it uses microwave inductive EMI technology to improve input signal-to-noise ratio quality, reduce the noise floor, increase headroom, while improving efficiency and eliminating that dreaded 60Hz hum. Let me know if you're interested.

What it needs is a room with a good amount of enclosure (wall or window surfaces so that it can project and make sounds bounce off the walls). It does not do too well in an open loft plan. Size of the room does not really matter except when it is too small or too large (see user manual available online).

I can't vouch for its performance since I have nothing to compare it against, but in our particular setup, I can perceive something coming towards me and go beyond or vice versa which is pretty startling.

It will require fine calibration to make the unit perform to the level I describe, but it's all worth it - I certainly prefer this struggle over getting dirty and frustrated trying to hide speaker cables.

^ Those things (and the Bose deal) send front and rear signals out the same speakers - it uses a phase manipulation technique to make the rear signals appear "dislocated" if you will, which gives the appearance that sound is coming from everywhere. It's surround-like, but probably only acceptable for the undiscerning listener.

There's a hole in the frequency response curves for Bose shit that TK could drive his truck through. Smoke and mirror audio.

Never liked the over boosted basses and weak trebles of the Bose Acoutismass.
Currently using a Cambridge Soundworks which sounded a loud richer.
