I have no doubt that the 60 minutes story profiling the alleged misconduct of prosecutors has truth. It does. This entire situation reeks of tit for tat- You screw me, I screw you mentality. It is the kind of mentality that has kept our legislature from doing it's job for 2 years.
The Democrats had a lock on Alabama Gubernatorial politics since reconstruction. The much publicized governor's race feud between Attorney General Charlie Graddick and Bill Baxley, a situation that caused the average voter to swing and vote for Guy Hunt, the first Republican governor in over 100 years. It left a bad taste in the Democratic party's mouth, so the wheels began to spin in motion to capture Gov. Hunt in some questionable behavior. It didn't take long. An ethics complaint filed by a North Alabama resident alleging Gov. Hunt used a state aircraft to go to preaching engagements (Hunt was a Primitive Baptist preacher) was the first attempt. Forget that Gov. Folsom used it to visit whores and Gov. Wallace used it to gamble in Vegas, but preaching engagements was the sure thorn to prick the craws of the average voter. And, who could argue? 2 wrongs don't make a right. So, Gov. Hunt reimbursed the state for those engagements he used the plane for and promised not to do it again.
But, that wasn't enough. So a criminal investigation, launched by Attorney General Jimmy Evans into alleged misappropriation of inaugural funds took flight. Gov. Hunt paid off personal debts that he had run up by borrowing money on his home and farm for the gubernatorial race. The money he used was from the left over gubernatorial inaugural fund. This money was donated, just like campaign contributions, by individuals and businesses for the inaugural celebration and expenses. Any monies left over had been used for decades by other governors to pay off campaign debts. But, all of a sudden, according to Jimmy Evans, it was illegal. So, Gov. Hunt was tried and eventually convicted of ethics violations involving inaugural funds and was stripped of his governorship, in which a Democratic Lt. Governor was ushered in. Hmmm.
The problem with the whole Hunt prosecution was that NO LAW HAD BEEN VIOLATED, regardless of the assertion of our crooked ass Attorney General Evans that laws had, indeed been broken. To top it all off, Hunt's accountant, Gene McKenzie, was under indictment and refused to testify on Hunt's behalf for fear of self-incrimination (McKenzie would later testify at Hunt's pardon hearing that Hunt was innocent of all 'charges' and that he, alone, was responsible for diverting the money to Hunt's personal accounts). The Jury and Judge swallowed it hook, line and sinker. A conviction was obtained under false pretenses. It took several more years and millions of dollars worth of lawyers to finally break through to the pardons and parole board that Hunt had been convicted, ex post facto. When the P&PB reviewed the conviction, a full pardon was issued and his conviction erased. Gov. Hunt had paid back the money to his own fund, which under the new law, reverted back to the state.
So, this is a little background into the political feuding in Alabama between the two parties. The Alabama Democratic party was so sure that removing Gov. Hunt would lock every future election in their hands, they didn't even see the feds coming when Siegelman went down.
But, fortunately for Alabama politics, this was a federal bribery and corruption case. Rove's alleged short sightedness in trying to catch Siegelman in petty transgressions was merely an anomaly. No one expected the big kahuna to come out of this. Like a gift from the sky.
So, like it or not, Siegelman did it, every bit. I know it makes one feel disgusted the way it played out but this shit is the way politics is played throughout the country. Politics is dirty and muddies every clean hand that tries to join it. If one doesn't like how this went down, then the sure way to begin cleaning it up is to start with themselves. But, we don't really seriously expect politicians to clean up their own act, do we?
