In the Bay area, $2k for a Japanese 30K rebuilt is not a bad deal. Make sure the compression on the new motor is good. You are looking at 30 hours just to pull out the old and put in the new with all the hookups.
If you drove the car ANY distance with the head gasket blown you most likely warped the heads which are a bitch to square up. Would cost as much as dropping in that motor.
If the rest of the car is in good shape, and you like the design, feel and want to keep it for a few more years, $2K is a very good deal on a R&R motor.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
