When I lived in the ME, I made the rounds of companies we worked with every four month.
A number of them were in Italy, from Milan to Cremona, all the way S. to Ancona. In Spain I would visit Barcelona and a few other towns in Catalonia, then go North to Madrid, followed by Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria, plus Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
From the North of Spain, I recall food prepared with plenty of garlic, a fondness for a 'Jerez' (I am familiar with the City), and a fiery regional spirit called orucho. Kind of like a rough grappa on steroids. For an Artist, after the Prado, the original Miro museum on Mallorca (famed for its light by painters), and the sister museum in Barcelona are worth a visit.
I have known Spain since Franco's times (and Portugal with Salazar for that matter), Barcelona and Gaudi's architecture has long been a favorite. Wonderful place.
At the harbor end of Barcelona's Las Ramblas sits a plain white washed building, where great Paella is being served.
P.S Just thinking about Barcelona makes me miss the place.
