I'd still like to know what the hell's in those files that has everyones noses so out of joint... They're acting like their medical records have been posted on the Internet! I think that underneath all of this is just another shallow attempt to blame President Bush for anything and everything that goes wrong anywhere and everywhere.

As far as I'm concerned, it isn't what is, or is not in the files that is important: What's important is that the government is unable to protect the private info about it's citizens.
First it was Clinton back in the early 1990's, then it was Hillary sampling FBI files in the late 1990's and now this. How f-ing much time do they need to secure our private info?

There is NOTHING so private that some government employees or contractors can't get to it. These people had clearance to look at that stuff, and the only reason they were caught was that there were tags on all those files. There are no tags on YOUR file, does that make you feel better?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these guys were contracted by the Government to process this type of data right?
It's not like some unknown entity breached the secret file code system to get access.
It boils down to better vetting of the peoples hired.
Both of you guys are right, but that does not make my question any less pertinent.

If somebody wants info on me all they would have to do is stop at my residential outdoor mailbox ever so often when I'm at work.
Why risk cracking the Gov's system?

Yes. But nonetheless, people are snooping through citizens' files and have been for at least 20 years. That it was done before and that there is only innocuous information makes it no less an invasion, a breach of ethics and law, and a failure of government to protect its citizens from abuse by the government.

I have know idea what the answer is. Would you like stiffer penalties...envoke a statute of law that is punishable by bludgeoning
to death with stones the guilty party in a public arena.

That might be a big enough deterrent.
Ever held a clearance? There are 2 major deterrents. The first is a sense of personal honor detected by a tough application review process and the second is knowledge that there are people snooping around looking for a knucklehead to screw-up and that the punishment is extremely harsh.
I'd like to see the same for this type of thing. I suspect that the contractors lacked the first and had no fear of the second.
