The Cash Cow

More good reading, editorial from the local paper:

Government isn’t a ‘cash cow’

Everybody knows that milk is a very desirable and popular food. Some “city folks” may not be familiar with where it comes from, and how. But “country folks” know that to get milk you have to have a cow.
Cows don’t just ”give” milk. You have to “take it away from them” by milking. And for a cow to produce milk, it must be fed and cared for in many ways.
We may understand the basics about cows, but it is amazing how many people seem to mistake the federal government for a “cash cow,” and understand so little about it.
In the current political campaigns, have you noticed that the main Democrat candidates have been telling us what they would have government “give” us, as though government were a “cash cow”?
If candidates promised to give us money directly from their own pockets, or from their campaign funds, for medical care, farm subsidies, business favors or any number of other things, they might be prosecuted for bribery, for trying to buy our votes.
But ironically, when they make the same kind of promises — not paying with their own money but offering money extracted from taxpayers — it’s not bribery! It’s “legal,” and quite popular.
If you read the Constitution, you will find the purposes and powers of the federal government very specifically defined — with all others excluded by the 10th Amendment in the Bill of Rights. Our government was never intended to be a welfare agency. Much of what the government does, therefore, is really unconstitutional. As a result, we have budgets of more than $3 trillion, taxes that are too high and inequitable, lots of red ink and a national debt of $9.2 trillion.
Government is supposed to defend our national security and personal freedom, provide justice and order and some specified services. But if you listen to much of the current presidential campaign oratory, and that of candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives, you’d get the idea that the whole purpose of government is to be a “cash cow” that elected officials will “milk” for us.
We know we have to feed a cow to enable it to give milk. We have to pay taxes or put a huge debt on our children and grandchildren to feed a government “cash cow” to pay for myriad promises.
Our Founding Fathers did not mean for us to become welfare state dependents. They meant for us to be free people, with independence. The “cash cow” idea came along later, with politicians promising to milk it for us, while we “feed” it with taxes and debt.
