Why?

The government of the USA in the late 18th Century defeated the greatest power on earth at that time, the British Empire. In mid 19th Century, the US government concluded a Civil War and put an end to the international slave trade, and concluded the century by defeating the Spanish Empire and soon would destroy the German Empire as well. In the 20th Century, it defeated the forces of worldwide fascism and communism. Today, it cannot seem to defeat a rag tag army in Afghanistan or find the religious fanatics who killed 3,000 of our citizens. The parallel boggles the mind. Compared to the other great feats of our nation, our inability to do so is astounding. Why?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

^Righteousness. The previous wars had it and the Iraqi war smacks too deeply of a blatant grab to us and those abroad. Educated citizens do not want to die for their country; we are living in an age where information is readily available like never before and more people see the monetary reasons behind fights. Preemptive and prolonged land occupations do not sit well with the American public. Religion is taking a back seat to materialism so people are letting go of ideologies. To take a land of people that is so against you, you must obliterate, humiliate, and annihilate the competition in order to get your way and start fresh. That is human nature and we are too educated and refined to do that now. Terrorism is just that, it strikes terror into the masses since it is something the weak can do to the mighty and get away with it.

General: Army strained, combat tours may be cut

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Army's chief of staff told a Senate panel Tuesday that combat in Afghanistan and Iraq has left "our Army out of balance, consumed by the current fight," and could affect troop levels in the near future.

"[We are] unable to do the things we know we need to do to properly sustain our all-volunteer force and restore our flexibility for an uncertain future," Gen. George Casey said.

Casey testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee along with Peter Geren, the secretary of the Army.

Casey said the goal is to reduce combat tours from 15 months to 12 months by midsummer.

He said that if Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, "is able to execute the announced plan of getting to 15 brigades by July, it would be our goal at that point to return to 12 months vs. 15-month deployments."

The testimony revolved around the defense authorization request for fiscal year 2009 and the stresses and challenges faced by troops.

Geren, urging senators to support the $141 billion requested by the Army, said he wants to "ensure that our soldiers have what they need when they need it."

"We are a nation long at war, facing an era of persistent conflict," he said. "Our soldiers and families are stretched. We are an Army out of balance. And we are consuming our readiness as fast as we build it. But our Army remains strong. It's stretched, it's out of balance, but it's resilient."

War is about killing people and breaking things. These days we treat it like urban renewal-we need too many plans and permits and consensus. Until we get back to killing the men, raping the women and really taking possession of the ground, we will continue to slip into mediocrity. I know it sounds awful, but it did work for centuries.
