Interesting read on the second end of muscle cars

Not sure if it's been posted yet. Hopefully technology will help us keep high powered cars alive. It would suck to see a second iteration of the K car that gets insane good fuel economy but looks like a pile of dog sh**. lol.

A car cannot handle too well. Or brake too well. But after a certain point, there is a tremendous degree of diminishing returns (and negative effects) with respect to acceleration, something completely lost on automotive muscleheads..

As much as I like quick cars I do not for the life of me understand the need for 500+HP street cars. I had an 2000 E55 and frankly it was mainly a waste of engineering. It was no quicker than my 92 500Es yet touted over 100 more HP. Now the Benz sedan is up in the 500-600HP range. I have driven an S63. It is nice but...

I don't think we will see the end of the muscle car. I think we will see the end of the "there is no replacement for displacement" mentality that most of the car companies like to push. More cubic inches mean more power. It's the cheapest way to get the power, not the smartest way. It also sucks the most fuel.

The next generation of muscle car is already here. It has been for a while. Supra, 350Z, GTR, WRX. Cars with 125HP per Liter and all under 4 Liters. And with weights under 3000 pounds, the power/weight ratio and the HP/L ratio makes them lightening fast, fuel efficient and usually cheaper than their big block counterparts.

Mind you, I'm not bothered a bit by cars which are only driven occasionally for pleasure. Have as many horsepower as you need, to compensate for whatever you feel!

But the garden-variety car (or truck) now with 300-400hp, used as a daily driver, sitting in traffic wasting fuel every single minute, that's a disgrace.

I think the term "muscle car" should be reserved for big block American metal, although the Aussies had a pretty good run. Hemi...Mopar...etc. The models you mentioned could easily fall into the rice catagory. I have the deepest respect for the Supra albeit far overpriced. The WRX is an out-of-the-box racer but I don't think you're allowed to purchase one if you're over 25 years old.
We will certainly never see the great cars of the late 60's ever againwhere speed and power overshadowed everything else.

About six months ago I got to drive the 65 Corvette that I had restored several years back and had owned many years before. It is a great cruiser but it is more nostalgia than pure hot rod. And it was built up to pure spec. Great car but nothing like what we have now.

The top of the line "luxury" muscle car of the era was the W32 Olds 442 from 71-72. That car is a monster. Now, take a fully restored one, that is exactly as it was in 72 and drive it next to a 350Z or a Mustang GT or a CLK350. The only thing the 442 will do is burn rubber. Everything else will make you want to get in your newer car. Speed, handling, comfort. I will take the 560SEC any day.

Only thing I even begin to look at the older cars for now is "ice cream runs" which is really sad.

As a teenager, I used to imagine myself owning a Chevelle with a bad-ass small block. Now, I could care about any of those "muscle cars", with the exception of the '69 Camaro. I'd love a vintage convertible - even a big old tuna boat. Love convertibles.

The way my little 3.2 litre V-6 pulls, even today's V8's (like the WS6 T/A) don't hold a candle. Again, I'm at a loss as to why 100+ HP/litre isn't standard, and why 40+ MPG isn't the norm. Laziness.

Oh I totally agree!
My buddy had a Hurst Olds, at the time I had the Challenger 383 with a 6 pack* and my roomie had a 'Cuda. We screeched and made lots of noise and it was a harrowing ride. Nowadays if I don't catch myself, I'm doing 85 and it feels like 40.



* There used to be a thing in the bay called a carburetor......can you say carburater? Sure, I knew you could.
