Civil Lawsuit Filed Against Vigilante Roger Barnett
Border Vigilantes Armed With Assault Weapons Terrorize Local Douglas Families And Children

Victims file civil lawsuit against Barnett family & call for state prosecution
Border Action Network: Campaigns

On October 30th, 2004, border vigilante Roger Barnett detained members of the Morales and English families in Douglas, Arizona, threatening them with a loaded AR-15 assault rifle and attack dogs, and barraging them with verbal abuse and racist insults. The children, ages 9-11, and their parents, who believed Barnett intended to murder them, suffered severe emotional trauma.

Vanese Morales, one of the 11-year-old victims wrote in a prepared statement: “What Barnett did was wrong because he pointed a gun at us and made us think he was going to kill us. (My little sister) was shaking and screaming…Barnett didn’t care how it affected us. And now we have to live it with it everyday. We could have died!”

The Morales and English families, with the support of Border Action Network held a press conference on Monday, November 29th, 2004 announcing the civil lawsuit both families are bringing against Roger, Donald and Barbara Barnett.

“I didn’t serve six years in the United State Navy so that my family’s civil rights could be violated in our town of Douglas,” said Ron Morales, a United States Navy veteran, U.S. citizen, and long-time resident of Douglas. Mr. Morales was outraged that the armed vigilante attacked his family and that Barnett has been doing the same to immigrants crossing the Arizona desert for nearly ten years.

Ana and Ed English, who’s 11-year-old daughter Emma was accompanying the Morales family on an afternoon hunting trip when Barnet assaulted them, joined the Morales family in bringing a civil suit against Barnett. The suit was filed Friday, November 26th with the Superior Court in Cochise County.

The families announced the lawsuit in order to bring attention to the community-wide effects of vigilante activities in southern Arizona and to demand an end to the tolerance offered to such dangerous groups by state and federal law enforcement agencies that have declined to investigate or prosecute Barnett and other vigilantes for previous incidents.

However, Ana English is not confident that local authorities will take action against the Barnetts. “The day the assault took place, Roger Barnett made it clear to the deputy and our family that nothing would happen to him...The lack of action by the authorities leaves us few choices. Today, we are announcing the filing of a civil lawsuit against the Barnett family because we are left to protect ourselves and others who might be unfortunate enough to meet the Barnett’s in the desert.”

The press conference featured the victims of the crime: Renee and Ron Morales, Ron’s father Art Morales, and their two daughters, Angelique Morales (9) and Venese Morales (11) as well as Morales family friend Emma English (11), and her parents, Ana and Ed English.

Also present were Jesus Romo, the attorney bringing the civil suit against Barnett and Jennifer Allen, Executive Director of the Border Action Network, who is currently backing this and two other civil suits against border vigilantes, an international human rights lawsuit against the U.S. government for failing to prosecute border vigilantes, and campaigns urging Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard to investigate and prosecute illegal vigilante activities in southern Arizona border communities.

“It doesn’t matter how long, hard and how high we have to pursue this lawsuit. Our families need to show our girls that no one can point a loaded gun, threaten to kill them and get away with it. No one can refer to us as “ignorant Mexicans”. (This incident) only reiterates that racism and hate is still alive in our nation and our civil rights are in question. Now it’s up to our elected officials and authorities to do their jobs, protect our rights and enforce the laws that govern us”, concludes Mr. Morales.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Without the massive influx of illegals into the U.S., Mexico would be forced to finally put its house in order, or face a Revolution.
