Please note what I wrote on Feb 15, post #93 regarding this difference.
....Islamists are the kook, fascist fringe who have declared against the US, sometimes also called Jihadists. We refer to the rest as peace-loving Muslims.
I did see that. Had I put that post together with the one in question I might not have been so quick to suggest bigotry.
As I pointed out before, there are folks from all over the world on this forum, much like on FARK or some of the other fora in which I play. While we in America may have, as a collective decided that Islamist means "the kook, facist fringe", many folks in the world do not share that tight finite view of folks who practice Islam. To many it means "person of Islam" or "People of Islam" depending on whether the S in included.
So when they see "destroy the Islamists", they see the broad brush, not a minuscule, specific subset [which is crazy] of the vast majority. Whether intended or not it conveys bigotry. It is like when Southern White Guy says something critical of a specific black person or group it is often construed as being racist against blacks. Not the intent but the result is just the same.
While you and I might just
disagree on the use of the word Islamist, folks of the Muslim faith might not be so forgiving when they understand that you or I didn't mean "ALL" of them, just some of them. And that is what causes some of the hatred against the Western culture. They hear the words - they may or may not understand the nuance.
So if there are ways to stop the hate, other than repeated Shock and Awe, it seems that the words we use are one of the simplest ways to do it. Will it solve the problems, NO. Will it plant a seed. Just maybe.
