I think Skippy answered the question all by himself. He doesn't know the difference.
And as for a better label, I believe the working word is "terrorist". That way, we don't insult anyone's religion as "we" try to define the difference between an Islamist and a Muslim. That is really not OUR distinction to make.
Want to go fight terrorists, that is fair. Including an entire religion in your destroy box, that is bigotry.
McBare: this is a test of your ability to learn new things. I am making your task easier by quoting liberally from a ready source about Islamism: Wikipedia, which has a lengthy and scholarly treatise on how Islamism is related to Islam. They are not one and the same. My assertion was, and still is, that Islamists are our enemies and must be destroyed for us to be safe. To get involved in an intellectual discussion about their religion avoids the issue for me. One cannot negotiate with folks who are sworn and determined to kill you.
Islamism (Arabic: al-'islāmiyya) is a term that denotes a set of political ideologies
holding that Islam is not only a religion but also a political system, the teachings of which should be preeminent in all facets of society.
Islamism holds that Muslims must return to earlier models of Islam by introducing sharia, or Islamic law, into modern society. Islamism often espouses pan-Islamic political unity.
Islamism also often asserts that western military, economic, political, social, or cultural influences in the Muslim world are un-Islamic and should be replaced by purely Islamic influences. Definitions of Islamism vary. Some sources suggest that its tenets urge "support for identity, authenticity, broader regionalism, revivalism, [and] revitalization of the community" while others define it as "an Islamic militant, anti-democratic movement, bearing a holistic vision of Islam whose final aim is the restoration of the caliphate." Attributes of sharia law supported by many Islamists include "enforcement of Islamic punishments, including prohibitions on taking interest, playing music, showing television", and enforcing traditional dress and prayer attendance.[4
Maybe you'll recognize some of these Islamist movements:
International — Al-Qaida, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Hizb ut-Tahrir
Afghanistan — Taliban
Algeria — Groupe Islamique Armé, Islamic Salvation Front, Groupe Salafiste pour la Prédication et le Combat
Egypt — Gama'at Islamiya
Lebanon — Hizballah
Iraqi Kurdistan — Islamic Movement in Kurdistan, Islamic Group of Kurdistan, Islamic Union of Kurdistan
Iran Kurdistan — Khabat
Palestinian Territories — Hamas
Central Asia — Hizb ut-Tahrir
South Asia — Jamaat-e-Islami (there are Jamaats in India, Pakistan and followers of Wahhabism), Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen
Turkey — Justice and Development Party (disputed), Felicity Party
Bahrain — Al Wefaq Asalat
IMO Islamists are not equivalents of our "Holy Rollers" that you and I might dismiss as harmless fruitcakes, but indeed true believers that would replace our government with a theocracy based on their religious beliefs, much like the Taliban did in Afghaistan. Not just a belief system, but a political system based on 8th century traditions. And they are willing to create havoc for us to accomplish their goal. That is not acceptable to me. That's why I say that when they can be identified, they must be destroyed. If that is bigotry, so be it.
