Sheriff: Cross-dressing driver 'unsettling'
A man in the Standish area has forced other drivers to swerve, and it's not a prank, officials say.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man who has a mustache and has been seen wearing women's underwear, a garter belt and black high-heel boots.
Since last spring, the sheriff's office has received six reports that a motorist wearing that outfit has pulled in front of female drivers, jumped out of his vehicle and modeled his attire in the roadway.
The women have had to swerve to avoid him, Sheriff Mark Dion said.
"The behavior is not necessarily criminal in terms of dress, but the fact he's jumping out in roadways and apparently targeting females who are alone, driving their cars, seems to suggest to us we have to talk to him," Dion said.
The first report came last April on Warren Road in Standish. The most recent incident occurred Sunday on River Road in Standish. Similar episodes have been reported in Buxton.
The incidents appear to be confined to the Bonny Eagle and Chicopee neighborhoods. Most happened in the early morning, though the latest was in the afternoon, Dion said.
"It's not a huge geography he's working in. That's why we're hoping he might be recognizable to someone, in or out of uniform."
Police initially suspected it was a college prank, but the incidents have continued and may be escalating. On Sunday, the woman reported that the man passed her and cut her off before jumping out into the road. The woman got a good look at the man and provided a description for a police composite sketch.
The man apparently wears black thigh-high stockings, a garter belt and a camisole, in addition to the boots.
He is described as white, 5 feet 11 inches tall and in his late 20s or early 30s, with brown hair, a mustache and a thin build. Although the composite sketch shows a somewhat effeminate face, investigators say it is definitely a man.
Authorities are describing the man as a "person of interest" and say he has been seen driving a black sedan and, more recently, a red pickup truck, possibly a Toyota.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 774-1444, Ext. 2112.
"It's unsettling, and either he's going to get hit by a car or he's going to cause somebody to have an accident," Dion said. "The cross-dressing is definitely an item of curiosity; however, if he were doing this in a pair of blue jeans and a T-shirt, we would still want to talk to him."
