That's a shame. I am fortunate to live close enough to DC that I can hear Coach Thompson on AM 980 in the early afternoon. While ostensibly a sports talk call in show, Thompson (Jr.) frequently shares his viewpoints on a variety of issues that comes as a surprise to anyone expecting a rehash of yesterday's game.
The man is a true coach. There's so many things going on the in the world of sports that have nothing to do with the game that when he offers an opinion, I can almost hear callers blink and rethink their own positions.
Professional Sports is almost a laboratory experiment in society. The sudden rise to fame, ridiculous amounts of money and nearly criminal lack of guidance offered by those who should know better offers a rare look at the life that the athlete comes from. Character flaws, choice of friends and associates, old habits and more are suddenly magnified a hundredfold by the glare of the spotlight and the eye of the camera.
Michael Vick is a prime example. Mainstream America may have had an inkling of what goes on in the world of dog fighting thanks to Animal Planet's show "Animal Cops". I thought that it was a midwest thing with Detroit leading the way. To discover that a large subculture exists in Baltimore and neighboring Virginia came as a complete surprise to me.
Thompson has covered that in depth and brings a perspective as a former NBA star (Celtics and Oscar Robertson era) and more importantly, as a coach (read: Teacher) of the Hoyas that you just don't get from the talking heads of broadcast TV.
When March Madness arrives in a month or so, look for a game in which he will be the featured analyst. Get past his folksy, down home speaking style and listen to the words. Due to the nature of the broadcast, there will be more basketball talk than anything else, of course but he usually has an insight that others don't.
Damn it. I just realized you found one of the buttons and pressed it.
