He is lucky that his employer does not fight the claim so he gets his 13 weeks of benefits. He is counted on the roles of the Unemployed for 16 weeks - from the day he was fired until a week after the last check. If he is really lucky he can get an extension for another 13 for a max of 26 weeks. Now the "OFFICIAL" count is 29 weeks of total unemployment.

After this point, Dig no longer is counted as Unemployed. If he has not found a job and has just been raising his post count on BenzWorld OT, he is also not listed among the Employed. He is "off the books".

So the Politicians are able to claim one less unemployed, that 5% unemployment number does not go up and all is well in the employment world, except Dig still doesn't have a job - all because of FTL Enterprises new Buck for Joy DC powered stimulator [DO NOT use while driving!!!]

Due to the unusually high lead content in the 'made in China' Buck for Joy, I would have been forced to ask for ID from anyone who wanted to purchase it to make sure that only adults would suffer brain damage from its use. No doubt, some tree hugging, left wing liberal would feel the compulsion to complain to the higher powers about the erosion of privacy rights in this country caused by this imbecilic and unnecessary practice. A lengthy letter to the president, complete with bullet points, pie charts and latest report from the Underwriters Laboratory covering the entire line of FTL products would be shunted off to some cubicle flunky who flips coins all day to decide who gets to keep their job and who hits the bricks.

And THAT'S how I end up 'Off the books'.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Not at all. Just because someone is not on either the employment or unemployment rolls does only means that there is a percentage of Americans [counted by the US Census] that are not counted when the Politicians count Full Employment or Unemployment figures. Nothing particularly magical about it. Simple math really.

Now Jayhawk, I bet even you can see the humor in these remarks. The unintentional humor I mean.

There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey. --John Ruskin
