Market price.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thatís what I intend to reverse.

Are you saying market price for their teaching skills, the results of their work [SATs of their students], their demand within a geographic market or their popularity among students?

What they are willing to work for, just like real people.

Until we disconnect the government funding and the government provision of education services, I'm quite comfortable with leaving wages and benefits where they are. When we move to a voucher system and let the funding travel with the kids to a parent choice school, then I'd be open to rewarding teachers at a higher level based on competence and accomplishment. Unfortunately the current system, with some exceptions for charter schools, is union contract controlled and rewards mediocrity at the same level it rewards excellence. In general, pay for teachers is at the "market clearing" price--that's all we have to pay to get the teachers we need. There are very few Bret Favres.

Charter member of the Vast Rightwing Conspiracy and proud of it.
