'That's Not My Job': Romney Not Evaluating Defeats

When Michigan voters head to the polls tomorrow to cast their ballots in the Republican primary, Mitt Romney hopes to rebound in a state where he has "deep roots."

Romney, who finished second in the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary, not only grew up in Michigan but met his wife there, and his father served as Michigan governor for three terms.

Polling over the weekend has Romney with a slight edge over Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. But as with Iowa and New Hampshire, the race is too close to call.

ABC News: Can Romney Rebound in Michigan?

The father, George Romney, was the head of the failed American Motors, of nearby Kenosha, Wisconsin, wasn't he?

I wonder if Michiganders will give that fact any consideration, if indeed it is worthy of any, and if they even would remember it.

I grew up in Michigan and George Romney was the Lee Iococca of his day! His leadership saved AMC from the brink of collapse in the late 50's. It was Romney who made the difficult decision in 1957 to drop the Nash and Hudson brands -- two of the oldest marques in the business, and the company's legacy -- to concentrate exclusively on the compact Rambler line. It turned out to be a brilliant stroke: AMC's sales quadrupled in two years, and Rambler passed Plymouth to become the third best-selling make in the U.S. Some AMC historians believe that if the company had not abandoned Romney's strategy of concentrating on a single compact platform (an approach that worked spectacularly for Volkswagen in the 60's) it might still be around today. His name is revered in Michigan and can only help his son Mitt.
