In Colorado, the wages are average for teaching, but the annual increments are COLA and experience and education acquired, so movement through the scale is fairly rapid.

The real treat is that a teacher can retire after 30 years at 3/4ths of the highest pay grade. That, my friend, is called a "defined benefit" retirement plan, something that is almost unheard of in the private sector anymore. And there is no employee contribution to the plan.

A fair evaluation of teacher pay must include the retirement benefit.

Plus most teachers work only nine months per year, which gives them the opportunity to supplement the income they do make as teachers.

Yes you do...
Let me give an example: The state of Maryland wants to keep taxes low and who do you think is the first victim in cuts in salaries and expansion freeze? Just today, the governor decided that maybe it will also be a good idea to freeze all tuitions at Maryland University systems.
You want better teachers? Pay up

You don't seem to understand that in the case of all the public schools--IHEs or Elem & Secondary--the state usually picks up only about half of the cost. The local school boards, which you elect, or the state boards of education, which you also elect in most states, that make the critical decisions about spending and salaries.

This tells me that you know nothing about teachers and their lives. Ask any teacher what they do with what you think is free time or time to make more money. Most will tell you that they end in mandatory training and forced to attend more classes to maintain some bullshit standard set by someone who never picked up a piece of chalk or stood in front of students.
Nor sir take your teaching job and shove it! I am very happy to be a dancer now and truly see some real money being stuffed in my ass crack. At least it's not bullshit being blown up there by some administrator telling me that they can't adjust our pay to the cost of living or even catch up with inflation.

Jayhawk, by your words and attitude I hope you never consider the teaching profession.

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thatís what I intend to reverse.
