The resulting decline in the sales of beef and pork would soon drive the ranchers and farmers into a financial state requiring alternate, if not illegal practices to survive.
1. Rustling. I foresee anywhere from modest illicit culling of infant herds to wholesale theft of the entire stock by greedy miscreants who would swoop in at the 11th hour (or month, as it were), and purloining the breeder's profits with little or no effort and cost to themselves.
2. In the event that a breeder suffers a misfortune such as premature death through accident or illness or worse, becomes barren for an extended period might resort to selling those offspring who might have exceeded the proscribed age. Unless some sort of 'expiration date' as it were, is branded into the flesh at birth, how can an honest merchant be certain that the product he is offering to the public is truly as advertised.
I'm just sayin'.
