"We knocked the bastard off!"...

...Ed Hillary (later Sir Edmund Hillary) after reaching the top of Everest with his Sherpa guide Tensing Norgay... back in 1953.
Ed died today.
RIP one of lifes genuine - and rare - good blokes.

Btw, I tried to alter the thread title inaccurate 'bugger' to the accurate 'bastard', but failed - the crappy site thingy wouldn't allow me.
Hillarys comment will forever be as iconic a statement as 'One step for a man....'

Well, we all go eventually. Not many of us can claim to be the first to conquer Everest wearing like what? raccoon coats and moose blubber boots. Nowadays everyone is fitted to the teeth and there's always a hovering chopper waiting to take the folks with a frostbitten pinkie to Cedars-

Anyone who climed Everest in his day with that equipment and clothing and did it just to knock another one off deserved a good innings - what a guy

"I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend, if you have one."
- George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill.

"Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second ... if there is one."
- Winston Churchill, in response.
