Change of mind

What will change a person's mind? Appropriate thread to start given the dialogue on GCC.

The Edge Annual Question — 2008

When thinking changes your mind, that's philosophy.
When God changes your mind, that's faith.
When facts change your mind, that's science.

WHAT HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT? WHY?

Science is based on evidence. What happens when the data change? How have scientific findings or arguments changed your mind?"

"They are the intellectual elite, the brains the rest of us rely on to make sense of the universe and answer the big questions. But in a refreshing show of new year humility, the world's best thinkers have admitted that from time to time even they are forced to change their minds." — James Randerson, The Guardian

The World Question Center 2008

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and that’s what I intend to reverse.

~ Senator Barack H. Obama

This poses a good question. research into this suggest that once an opinion is formed the mind then finds ways to support the decision.

one of the best teachers I had would have open debates in his class. the assignment would be given the week before, handed out to two people. Then told to argue the issue. Now the tricky part is that he would not tell either person which side to argue for until the next week, forcing you to be ready to discuss either side. I have never forgot that lesson and it has made me a more open minded person.

Fire.

As in,

"I will not jump out of that eighteenth story window."

Dig, the room is on fire and the window is the only way out.

"Help me open this eighteenth story window so I can jump out."

Okay, but if you land on baby ducks, remember it was your call.

In reading a couple dozen narratives from the site you've linked, I'm again struck by a question I've posed here before. Does your opinion matter? And not only to others but even to yourself. If one's opinion changes because of anything other than hard evidence, what value did that opinion hold in the first place? And if it held such little value then, why should it suddenly hold more now that some sort of epiphany has changed it? I'm probably looking far too deeply into this, and tend place an unnaturally high premium on maintaining an open mind. Anyway, that's my insignificant opinion, which may or may not change as the ravages of time and advancing decrepitude continue to erode my mental faculties.

Which BWOT poster had a family member/friend/colleague/etc. try to escape a fire by leaping from a skyscraper window?

I apologize in advance for offending you.

Three subjects that I have had a pretty drastic change of mind about over the past years are:

War. I fully understand that there are times to go to war but after experience in both Viet Nam and as an officer in the midst of the bureaucracy of the Military I no longer believe that a country can go to war as a extension of a National Policy. It is one of the primary reasons I left the Air Force with 15 Active, 10 Reserve. I no longer wanted to be a part of that system.

Debt and Poverty. When I was getting my Masters in Economics I was taught, along with most others that debt and poverty are the result of poor discipline, inability to understand the ramifications of debt or simple laziness. Now I grew up in an area that has always been a center of poverty so some of this did not necessarily fit with what I grew up with but I rationalized that it was because I was too close to the problems and did not see it clearly. After I got out of the Military and started doing volunteer work back in the mountains I realized that my understandings and believes were wrong and much of what was happening was highly situational and not the fault of those in the area. Two decades of research has proven that this change of mind and belief has been correct.

Immigration. Like many my original inclination was that we had 20 million unwelcome visitors here and the solution was simply to send their ass back across the border. I lacked comfort with the belief on the simple though that it was "not fair to them" but in the big picture I understood that it was a better good if they were gone. BWOT came along on this discussion and many, many threads later I was, as I posted many times completely up in the air about it as the true solution seemed too complex to broad brush.

My trip to California in October answered my questions and provided a 180 turnaround for me on the subject. As I flew over square mile after square mile of this country's breadbasket, full of crops that can only be picked by hand I realized that there is an economy that cannot exist without many of these folks. Further I talked with an ancient friend who is with UC Davis who deals primarily with migrants and from that I got an understanding that even thought the COST of the illegals is HIGH, their contributions are HIGHER in the economy.

So there are three examples of 180 degree turnarounds. One from 1986 and a career changing decision, one that affects my every day now and the third change which came about, pretty much through dialog from this forum.

Excellent topic, by the way.
