Grilled rat...tastes like chicken

Every time I drive up to Ayuthaya and back I pass little roadside stalls that sell grilled rat. Today I bought one and brought it back home. As it is already grilled it need only be heated in a microwave. Served with a spicy hot sauce it tastes and looks like the dark meat of a chicken.

OK, granted it doesn't make a great 'plate presentation' with its tail still attached. And you might want to remove the head before serving it to guests.

It goes best with beer or red wine. And you might want to down a few glasses of that before you start with the fork.

Yes it does taste like chicken. In my first job here in China I was invited by the workers to taste a special dish, wanting to make an impression and keep them happy I agreed.

So I started eating this roasted meat that had been chopped up and it was quite good, then I hear a ZAP like a small electrical short and everyone ran to the back door of the kitchen, low and behold there was the workshop foreman with a stunned rat holding it up by the tail and then he put it in a bucket of boiling water. They had set up an electric fence and enticed the rats with food inside the fence.

The worst part is I had to eat more of it washed down with gallons of Beer to keep them happy. I simply had to convince myself that it was chicken and not RAT, puke.

ERIC.

Yes, You really have to eat rat by washing it down with something strong. Pass on the Evian water and go for the Smirnoff vodka (and eschew the shot glasses and ask for a proper tumbler).
