Designo_E320 and DrewProf have gone on and on about this, and I actually knew NOTHING about it until reading their posts.
It seems like some kind of political 3rd rail or something, NO ONE dares touch it.
The word "Holocaust Guilt" sometimes surfaces in discussions about this.
On the one hand, Israel is a sovereign nation, and its interests shoudn't trump that of the USA, in my mind.
I think the Muslim world is extermely irritated by this perceived "tilt" (Sirhan Sirhan and Osama Bin Laden come to mind as extreme examples of people ACTING OUT on their irritation)
but on the OTHER hand, the Jewish people who live in this country are huge in number, and what they contribbute to the society of the USA in countless ways, and I have the idea they are, in Israel, friendless, and surrounded by a number of people there who would without question, literally be happy to drive them all into the sea once and for all, and that CANNOT be pemitted.
Just watch Obama getting railroaded soon. His comments that the Palestinians are suffering have not gone unnoticed by AIPAC and they will smear him for that, it's just a matter of time.
Basically AIPAC works this way: If you say anything against Israel's policies then you are through as a politician. Remember when Representative Ellison got elected to congress and how he was grilled by the media for being Muslim? (Here is an example
) Who do you think was pushing the buttons?
How about Congressman Moran who pointed out how AIPAC pushed for the war on Iraq
? He got grilled for it like a little bad boy
Let's be clear about this: The majority of American Jews voted AGAINST the war on Iraq, so clearly AIPAC's objectives do not represent them.
