"Good Samaritan" demands money for helping disabled man

Police: Woman demanded money for her good deed

Madison police said a man in a wheelchair was robbed by a woman who helped free him from a snowbank on Christmas Eve and then demanded payment for her good deed.

The Madison man, who is in his 40s and has cerebral palsy, told officers he was on his way to the drugstore to get medication about 9:30 p.m. when his chair became stuck in the snow on East Washington Avenue near Johnson Street, police said.

The man said the woman, "who at first appeared (to be) a good Samaritan, " got him out of the snow but then wanted money, according to a police report released Wednesday. He was afraid to say no, police said.

"She didn 't physically harm him or show a weapon, but he felt threatened, " Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.

The two then went to a cash machine where the man gave her some money -- less than $100, police said -- from his account. "He tells her the code and she punches in the numbers, " DeSpain said.

The woman was described as white, 5 feet 2 inches tall and thin, with short brown hair. She was last seen wearing a beige parka and a stocking cap, police said.

The man told police he believes he was targeted for robbery because of his disability.

The question needs to be asked:

Why didn't he have chains or snow tires on his wheelchair?
