Any football scholars out there?

I was watching a football game today and a team fought hard to get a touch back called and even risk a time out, but at the end the receiving team still got to start at the 20 yard line. I don't understand, what is the use for a touch back.

You'll have to supply a little more information. A touchback occurs when the ball goes into the offense-to-be team's (ie - receiving a kick, making an interception, fumble recovery, etc.,) end zone. The key is for that team to not possess or touch the ball prior to it going in there.
This is distinguished from safeties (2 points awarded to the defending team), where the offense takes the ball from the field of play into the end zone and is downed there. Given that as a start, what did you see?

There was nobody around and the guy caught it right at the end zone. and the opposing team fought hard to call it a touchback, and yet the the other team started at the 20 yard line thats what I can't understand.

Are you sure they weren't arguing for a safety instead of a touchback?

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

You are talking about the Steelers vs Ravens.

Initially ruled a Safety, Mike Tomlinson challenged the call. to which after the review it was reversed and ruled a touch-back.
