US braces for baby boom retirement wave

The first of the vast US baby boom generation goes into retirement in January, setting off a demographic tidal wave with wide-ranging economic, political and social implications.

The cost for government-funded social security and medical care for the boomers leaves a funding gap of between 40 and 76 trillion dollars for next 75 years, and this should provide grist for the liberal and conservative mills...

What I would really like is the elimination of SS in favor of other, more effective, "(forced?) savings plans..." SS had its time and its place, but that disappeared decades ago. In fact, I believe it has been largely responsible for creating the "lower class" in this country. IMO, SS has done more harm than good!

Interesting. It looks like I beat the rush. I was born in 1947 and retired the first of this year.

The ‘retirement boom’ may not happen - many will be forced to work into their 80s not being able to afford to retire.

I'm glad you finally noticed this. You might want to do a search and see the reams of conversation on the subject from the past two years.

And that very special $9.5Trillion National Debt [Charge ahead Tax] is going to make this issue so much more entertaining than it needed to be.

"...finally noticed..."? My clear and consistent thoughts over time on the subject are summarized in post #3. Where have you been? Doing searches??

Just woke up two hours ago.

Christmas was a bit of a mess at my Sis in laws house as the kids let the dogs [yes, we know who let them out] so three hours were spent in the cold looking for their two dogs. They keep telling everyone they are 'part lab' and 'part something else'. What they are are really dumb pit bulls.

So the house got trashed as mud was tracked everywhere, Wifie's mom who is not all that together decided to tell Sis in law [ER Doc] how to discipline the kids and one would think someone poured 93 octane in the room.

On the other hand I hid outside "looking for the dogs" and got tooted at by all sorts of folks who couldn't quite figure out me in a santa hat and hawaii shirt in 35 degree weather.

It's amazing you didn't get more than "tooted" at. If you were only wearing a santa hat and hawaiin shirt -- but then again in 35 degree weather not likely anybody noticed.

Forced labor? In America?

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thats what I intend to reverse.
