Admirable thinking indeed but given today's citizens and the system of today, the lobbyists would have a field day, surprised they have not gotten together and supported the idea themselves, think just how much cheaper it would be for them.........

And that would be different from now, right?

The biggest problems we are facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all and thatís what I intend to reverse.

At least today's politicians think past the edge of their nose and see the value of the legislation they propose, I think today's Joe Blow off the street would only look at this as a short term gig to reap as much as he could........

President Bush has won almost all of these battles in his 7 years. The Democrats consistently misunderestimate him and they certainly have misinterpreted their so-called anti-war mandate (and wasted much time by overplaying their hand) from the 2006 election. The 2006 results were from the corruption issues and Republican overspending. Now it's just reversed. Out of 11000 earmarks, 8000 were Democrat sponsored. And the Democrats chucked Paygo, which they just reinstated as a budgeting principle, in order to suspend the AMT without having to "make up the lost revenue" of 50 billion buckaroos. Paygo is just a PR approach to ratcheting up taxes anyway.

Point is Bot, I do believe that today's public are even more corrupt, more morally bankrupt and even more of an idiot than the 535 from 1790 that you refer too...........

One of the Representatives, not sure which one it was [I actually think it might have been edfreeman's guy in Chattanooga] let it slip that there has been an agreement for decades that the Majority in power gets 70% of all earmarks [whether good or questionable or bad] and the Minority party gets 30% [whether good or questionable or bad]. So, the numbers seem a bit skewed but are near the same ballpark as I assume there is no referee to officiate that split.

Very Pissed to see if PAYGO gets dropped on a long term basis or just on this Omnibus bill.

PAYGO is a great idea in that it does not allow spending to go to National Debt like it has over the past 7 years [which is a long term interest carrying tax]

Once again we see the Republicans attacking the Congress for argreeing with the Republicans. Weird.

As usual, reality is at play here. The Republicans can block anything with either a filibuster in the Senate or by a veto from the White House, something the public is well aware of, so why waste time on unwinnable fights. Better yet to give them more rope to hang themselves with.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
