I thought of highjacking the Gibson bus.

As I was driving south on 65 I came upon a Gibson Guitar bus. I have no hard physical evidence but I suspect they have the corpse of Chet Atkins aboard surrounded by a lot of really cool guitars.

Not to argue, but I think Chet more commonly played a Gretsch Country Gentleman

On a serious note, I've had a couple of recent converstions with music store owners/employees that said Gibson has become a real bear to deal with. It seems that they insist on a huge investment and want the dealers to have at least one of everything in inventory. I think this eliminates all of the "Mom and Pop" shops. I was also told, there is no longer a Gibson dealer in the entire state of WV but I think there still are a couple in KY, probably Lexington and Louisville.

MM, you may be right about Chet. That's why the good folks at Gibson are so dastardly parading his remains around on a tour bus.

hey are you in town?

I will check. I have to stop by a shop in the next week or so.

A funny. While working in NYC I had to go to Manny's which is the biggest music store, period. When you walk in you might see Clapton back in the guitar section or Billy Gibbs or Dave Sanborn in the horn section looking at a pickup or something.

I had to get a mixing board for a quick project and went to that section and started talking to the section manager. He stopped me and asked "what part of Kentucky are you from?" all based on my voice. I said Lex. Turned out he owns DooWap Shoppes in Lexington and Louisville and works at Manny's for the connections. For the next three years we ended up working together on various stuff.

McBear,
Kentucky

Hey Yoseyman, I'm pretty sure I am because I play the guitar and although hardly an expert, there's even a Chet Adkins signature Country Gentleman model available. No, I'm in West Virginia tonight. If I was in the 'Ville, I wouldn't have my martini handy, nor would I be online

I once ask Johnny Cash if I could play his guitar. Man, he really got pissed!

Good story McBear, and please do check at the Lexington store. One of the largest I've seen in Louisville is called First Quality Music and they are still a Gibson dealer but a salesman there was one of the guys who told me about the Gibson situation.

Speaking of Johnny Cash, there is a world-famous guitar dealer in Nashville called Gruhn Guitars (nice website btw). They had a black Martin previously owned by JC that I think they wanted about $35,000 for. If I remember correctly, it was a garden variety Martin except for the black finish.

A Gibson Les Paul Custom (1971) a Guild Starfire IV (1967) and a Martin D12-35 vintage about 1974. The GF wants me to start playing again so part of my Christmas present is some money toward a 6-string of some kind, and I want a Martin HD35 (to sort of match the 12-string). The only problem with my plan is I have to come up with about $1500 to buy the damn thing. BTW, First Quality sells all Martins at a 40% discount so you might want to have a look. They have a lot of other nice brands too, but they are in a pretty out of the way part of town. The guy told me they are primarily an internet dealer.
