In assymmetrical warfare (terrorism) unless the US could create a "front" within which to identify the enemy we were always bound to be on the defensive, always at the mercy of whatever initiative the enemy took. By dumping Hussein and drawing al-Qaida into Iraq we were able to put a face and a location on a wily, elusive, bunch of thugs. The result, as far as al-Qaida is concerned, is an enormously successful reduction in their leadership and their ranks. The troop surge and the new strategy of working closely with locals has helped the US drive al-Qaida out of Baghdad and scattered them in the countryside. They aren't gone; they are seriously weakened.

Maybe this will assist you in understanding the US strategy.
hahahaha, that was never the strategy it just happened to be a convenient excuse after every argument about why we invaded Iraq fell short. We had the mofos in Afghanistan and we could have made Pakistan take a more serious role but our leaders were more worried about AIPAC breathing down their necks for not invading Iraq soon enough. How easy it is to forget all that shit and now come up with how strategically well thought out it was to bring the war to their doorsteps? There was no Al Qaeda in Iraq before we invaded and now they are everywhere. Oh did you see the news today? A UN building hit by Al Qaeda in Algiers; let me ask you, did we strategically bring that war over there too?

If you want to learn of U.S. involvement in Iraq and our response to the 9-11 attack, start here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/sear...archid=1918695.

I am of course, assuming that you've already read the 9-11 Commission Report as mandatory background reading, as many here have.
