Iraq says the worst is over in Baghdad

Iraq's government today said security statistics showed that Baghdad had "defeated the forces of darkness" after more than a year of sectarian warfare, and the United States said it was crucial that Iraqi leaders use the relative calm to get their political fighting under control.

The government released numbers indicating a major decline in violent attacks in Baghdad and the surrounding areas. Attacks such as bombings numbered 323 last month, compared with 850 in February, when a U.S.-led security crackdown was launched, according to the government figures.

How many times are you going to bring claims that end up evaporating after a few events? Get a grip Jay.

Only as long as Iran keeps the moratorium on arms/logistics/cash support.
I see this as a demonstration of Iranian strenght / influence in Iraq.

Iran is playing a smart long term game, they behave now, the Americans reduce their force and they take over the parts of Iraq that control the oil.

So how is the whole democracy thing going? In effect, you guys are your own worst argument. Peace can only be achieved in Iraq at the continual cost of American lives, more expediture of American funds and ever increasing amounts of American troops. In other words, war and debt without end, aka "Neocon Republicanism". The ripple effects of this war are disasterous, a worthless dollar, trillions in debt when we need the money for SSI, and the loss of American prestige across the globe, and worst of all, an "empire" mentality when what we should really be doing is creating our own self-suffiency instead of stealing natural resources from others.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

I do too! Now if they really just want nuclear power instead of nuclear weapons this thing might just shake out to everyones advantage. But I won't hole my breath... As long as Ahmanutjob and Chavez keep beating the anti-U.S. drum, however, it will be touch-and-go...
