Olds Toronado

Went to look over a 1969 Olds Toronado this afternoon. It was in olive/sage green paint with green interior (not the one pictured-I didn't take my camera) and in very good condition. I was amazed to discover it only had 49xxx miles on the clock. I hadn't realised that those old boats were FWD and in fact, the most powerful FWD ever produced until the Caddy Allante was introduced.
Was wondering if anyone here ever had one in the family and has any impressions to impart?

The father of one of my best friends in High School had one. Seemed to be a great car, he loved it. He was the county coroner, needed something with good traction that would get him to various body sites; woods, whatever. Seemed to do the job.

I've never seen one before , it's a bit of a looker, green would work better than brown and tan as so many US motors I seen of that age. Are the headlights one per side or two?, I take it the outside of the grill rolls back when they are turned on.Wax that hood up and you'll be doing some massive slides over the front, just like stachy and couch.

Very good cars, deduct 25% for any green, brown, or gold one. The general public just hates those colors. Black, red, and jewel tone dark reds are the resale color kings right now. Can't think of anything bad to say about that car, but the '66 tornado is the one all the collectors kinda want.

When they debuted in 1966, they were the first of the big FWD cars. Pretty radical for the time. The Cadillac Eldorado followed, in 1967, and the reviewers were not impressed with them, especally the drum brakes they had.

"Fine, they said, (alluding to the car's smooth quiet ride) if you don't mind having, a smooth, silent CRASH!!!"

The 1969 Toronado was an exceptionally pretty car, an example of the time when GM used losts of chrome, and gas cost only about 30 cents a mile, and the driving their big cars "was like driving a sofa on a tennis court", as one British wag once said.

It is a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass Vista Cruiser, famous for the dark green tinted vista windows in the roof, shared only with the Buick Skylark Sportwagon from about 1965-1972. One of the more interesting and distinctive designs in the US mid size station wagon (known to you as the "estate" or "shooting brake") range during those years.

Hmmm, interesting-I was rather expecting horror stories considering it was pretty innovative at the time, but from what I have briefly read they appear to have been over-engineered for that reason. Strangely, I really like the green on green but I can understand how it would be less commercial.

I will probably go for a test drive sometime during the week (want to compare with my beloved Delta 88 with the 455) and will take some photos.

So I'm a bit out of touch with the market-what's the price range for that sort of mileage, good overall condition?

The UK calls them estates (shooting brakes went out of vogue in the 50's I think).

Over here we call them station wagons, wagons.

I like the 'skylight' windows.

They are no longer thick on the ground anymore.

They ate up front tires like jujubes, and if you are looking at one, I'd look REALLY carefully for rust bubbles under the vinyl roof, and especially around the front and rear window area, and the wheel arches.

Build quality was better than you would think, for an American car, an Oldsmobile was a fairly premium brand of car back then, with not much in the way of power robbing smog equipment other than an EGR and PCV valve.

Distinctive looking from any angle if you ask me.
