The limited edition Corgi Austin 1100 Estate Fawlty Towers car being offered exclusively by PBS stations as a pledge thank-you gift in conjunction with the premiere of Fawlty Towers Revisited and the 30th anniversary of Fawlty Towers actually is the correct replica of the car Basil loved to hate.
While taping Fawlty Towers Revisited in London in May, fomer Fawlty Towers producer/director John Howard Davies told the PBS crew that previous releases of an Austin 1300 as Basil's car were incorrect. "And I should know, because I had the same car -- an Austin 1100!" he explained.
These highly collectible cars are only available through PBS stations, and the set (pictured above) includes the car, Basil Fawlty figurine, complete with branch, and a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
Actually,I owned a Coventry-built 1978 Jaguar XL12 as my first lux car many years ago. All the problems led back to one major fact; heat fatigue. The car cooked itself due to overheating...and Lucas parts, generally. (I've heard some wags suggest Lucas guys drifted over to Bosch). The problem was largely solved by a Scottish Coventry-trained mech here in Toronto who implemented several changes including a customized rad &...believe it...using airplane gauge hoses in some parts in the engine! Truth is,when that '78 12 cylinder ran well,it left MB/BMW behind. When it acted up? Just get out & leave the keys in the car...
