Pienso espanol es muy estupido. No me encanta, pero es muy importante para mi. Yo sé casi cuatro lenguas ahora. Mi espanol no es muy bueno porque este es mi segundo ano. Buena suerte!

When I was in Santa Cruz I needed to ask directions a couple of times because apparently Santa Cruz believes that, off the main road, signage to points of interest are not ascetically pleasing and it required my somewhat broken Spanish to get the correct directions [but I did get them].

I learned in NYC that Whiteboy from the South was a distinct minority and that more times than not, English was not the primary language so I had as many people as possible helping me learn their language. One restaurant had a Cuban waitress. She taught me Spanish, I helped her get her GED. Another had a Russian server, same deal. I got to teach simple history, math, English and civics and I got to learn very basic Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese and Hindi.

As an aside we also talked religion so I got a pretty good immersion in Hindu, Buddhism, Judaism and Muslim concepts. They got to find out that all Southerners who happened to be recovering Baptists were not out to convert them.

Having lived in L.A., one of my greatest regrets was not taking the opportunity to learn Spanish while I was there.
So if you have the time and determination-go for it.

Had an opportunity to visit Germany 7 years ago, and one of the most striking contrasts was the number of natives who had taken the opportunity to learn other languages they might run into (namely, english). It was quite eye opening, and you'd do yourself proud to learn the language of people you are likely to interact with. Most American's don't think that way (including myself, since I hadn't taken the time to learn how to speak a lick of their language).

Learn it. Knowing another language can enrich your life in many ways. I did it, I learned to speak Spanish over that last 3 years and if I can do it (in my 40's) anyone can.
