Q: Why are you coming to England?
A: Visit friends.
Q: Who are these friends?
A: I only know them by their internet names
Q: How did you meet them
A: Didn't my earlier explanation seem somewhat obvious?
Q: What do you know about these friends?
A: They are all into automobile collecting or racing.
Q: Is there a race?
A: Not that I know of.
And it went on from there.
Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.

I used to travel a lot with a guy who had a hip replacement as a young man, and it sets the metal detector's off every time he goes through them at security. He would offer, in a kind of desperate little voice, the fact that he had a titanium hip implant. I was just in front of him once and leaned back and told the weenie standing there blocking his path, that that was bullshit, it was, in fact a penile implant. The guy chuckled and then took him to the wanding place and gave him the usual hand inspection. Well, at first he was pretty agitated about it, then he thought it was funny, and finally he offered the same excuse now and then if the security person seemed like they had a sense of humor. When we were leaving from Narita in Tokyo a few years ago, he gave the "penile" implant story to the security person, who happened to be a petite Asian woman who then gave him a very thorough going over. By this time he had become so accustomed to being an asshole and playing games about his implant he told her he found her inspection the most fun he had in Tokyo, and requested she do it again. Strangely, this actually brought a little giggle and she pushed him out of the inspection area without agreeing to repeat the procedure. A real strip and cavity search would have been truly memorable, though.
