I have a seven year old son in the second grade who is extremely intelligent as he is being given 3rd grade and 4th grade materials in class. His teacher wants him to skip a grade or 2 but I am insisting for now that he remain in second grade so he can just be a kid.
Actually this is not why I am writing this. He did something that tickled me and also got me thinking. this morning he work up and got ready just like any other day. When he came out his pants were a little loose so my wife told him to wear a belt. He said, mommy I don't want to wear a belt." Mommy asked why, and he said, : I want my pants loose so people can see my underwear!" We sat him down and explained to him that only bad kids do this and this is not a nice fashion. He understood and put on his belt. That was so easy. I think that if every parent sat down and not only listened to their kids BUT ALSO give them advice when needed then a lot of problems facing our children would simply vanish. I didn't want to tell him that what he wanted to do was the hip hop culture. He is too young to understand the hip hop culture at age 7. I mean i can't make him understand that hip hop is all about sex, drugs, dog fights, guns, materialism, cars with wheels with spinners and stereo systems that goo "boom." I simply told him that "bad kids" do it and that was simple enough for him to understand. I cannot stand people who wear pants sizes 20 sizes too big and show their underwear. Is that fashion? Shouldn't fashion look decent? Although I don't believe that kids should do every fashion but still at age 7, I would be willing to buy him a $100 pair of jeans before I let him wear that hip hop shit. $100 for pants for a 7 year old kid is also out of the question as far as I am concerned but would do that rather than him trying to act like a homie.
Gist of my post is that we as parents REALLY need to TALK to our kids.
