When you give more than you get you get the most important thing you could have going for you: righteousness.

Interesting and timely topic. A presenter at a meeting I attended last weekend discussed "success", and it's definitions.

They define success as "The progressive realization of worthwhile, predetermined, personal goals." Each word there is meaningful, if taken singularly. "Personal" was particularly interesting to me; they posit "something doesn't become important until it becomes personal".

There is a success ladder they describe, which goes as follows:

Success is based on Results.
Results are based on Behaviors.
Behavior is based on Attitude.
Attitude is based on Conditioning.
Conditioning is based on Input.

Hopefully this doesn't need further explanation; I think it's not without validity.

The record stands up well to this day.

Not to throw a wet blanket on this burning discussion of "success," but most of this crap is just meaningless bullshit! I would not bother to comment if that were all it is, but all that gobbledy-gook can actually stand in the way of people trying to achieve success. They spend so much of their life trying to discover the "meaning of success" that they never succeed--at anything. Discussing functional and operational definitions of success is OK, but trying to discover the "meaning" of it is not just BS, it can actually stand in the road of achieving it. I speak not just as someone who I define as successful, but as a behavioral psychologist who spent many years studying success and a lot of other related concepts.
